Growing up in the Steppe, as the locals will tell you, is not for the faint of heart. This life full of hardship was like second nature to the young Arasen of the Hotgo, who showed great promise of becoming a proud warrior like his father before him. However, he wouldn't see his dream realized thanks to the Dotharl tribe, whose warriors were parched for bloodshed. An evening ambush saw many of Arasen's friends and family meet their end. Arasen himself managed to flee with his young thirteen year old sister - only for her to succumb to her wounds by morning. With nobody else to guide him, the young seventeen year old wandered the Steppe until he could stomach those lands no more. Eventually, he found himself in the grand city of Kugane. Here, he adopted the new name of Ryce, and worked for an elderly couple for a handful of years. He learned that the couple had a son in Doma, and lost him to the Empire. They knew Ryce's pain, and treated him with love and respect in the few years that he lived with them. Once they passed, however, he was left with the inheritance that they would have given their birth son, and a promise to keep: Live, and see the world.Alone yet again, Ryce found his way to Eorzea by boat. He made for Ul'dah after hearing about their pugilists guild, as well as their arena for warriors to test their mettle. Here, he began making a true name for himself by pledging his services and skills to the Arena and Pugilists' guild. It wasn't long though before Ryce let the glory get to his head - and he challenged Raubahn himself. He lost, miserably, but despite this, General Aldynn extended an offer for Ryce to join the ranks of the Immortal Flames, to fight to protect the city and her people. Ryce took the offer without hesitation, eager to prove himself to the General. It was then that he met Baatu Ardakium, half elezen, half xaela, all muscle, whose unique lineage made him an Ishgardian-born citizen. The two were assigned together in the Immortal Flames, and despite the fact that they were both in dark times, they became fast friends. (With benefits. Who also love to beat the shit out of each other on occasion. Affectionately.)They, alongside the other members of their little squadron (a miqo'te man by name of U'vanoh, and an elezen woman named Orliene) spent the better part of a year building their reputation and getting themselves in no small amount of trouble while doing so. Ryce seemed to be doing well for himself. At least on the outside. His reputation however saw him as more of a playboy than anything else. Ryce was known by many to frequent the local bars, and on no few occasions did he bring someone home with him or find himself in someone else's bed. Haunted by his past, Ryce also sought to drink away his sorrows, to the point where his peers worried for his sanity. It was easy for those closest to him to tell that he struggled with depression and ptsd, though he was loathe to let many people close enough to share the details.Despite this, Ryce was later selected for a special mission, one that would see him join the ranks of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. He was to delegate between Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa, and deliver a message to the Free Company there. He accepted the job, if only for the change of scenery and fresh sea air... but he could never have guessed that he'd meet the most important person in his life there...

When Ryce and Solana met, they too became fast friends, and even faster friends-with-benefits. Their enjoyment of drinking led to a night of fun, which was nothing new for Ryce, who had taken his fair share of lovers prior. And yet... Solana was different. There was a similar, long-suffered sadness in her that he felt too, and for the first time in years, it made him want to be better.Their flings quickly turned into a serious relationship - of two broken souls finding their lost pieces in each other. Becoming each other's reason to keep going in this strange and cruel world. Ryce himself didn't quite believe in soulmates, but this was definitely the next closest thing. It was during the middle of the combat against the Primals that it came to light that they were expecting their first child (later revealed to be their twin daughters, Tora and Celeste). For this reason, Ryce made the easy decision to marry Solana and build them a home in Ul'dah - plans that fell short when the Garlean Empire's forces invaded the Waking Sands while Ryce was present. Ryce was taken to Castrum Centri with the rest of the captive Scions. While imprisoned there, there was no shortage of them making every attempt to interrogate them. Ryce, being stubborn and reckless as he was, often challenged their captors. It kept their attention drawn to him, and by this act, the others were spared the worst of the interrogations. However, Ryce's wounds were grave by the time they were rescued, and in the process, his left horn was cut off, leaving him deaf on that side.He spent nearly a month in recovery, with Solana and Raubahn keeping a close eye on him to ensure he didn't do anything brash. As much as he would have loved to join the Warrior of Light in their campaign against the Empire, he remained in Ul'dah and resumed his duties among the Immortal Flames. During this time, the Goldsmiths guild crafted Ryce a prosthetic horn, to aid in balancing his head.Later, Ryce was invited along to the Grand Banquet, where the leaders of each city state were to meet with one of Ishgard's representatives. He and his squadron were to remain on guard to ensure the leaders were protected. It was here that the Sultana was murdered and the Scions were attacked by the traitors among the Crystal Braves. In the chaos, Ryce was able to escape with Solana, Baatu, and U'vanoh, all thanks to Orliene's sacrifice as she stayed behind to fend off the Brass Blades and buy them time to escape. With nowhere else to go, Ryce convinced the group to make for Ishgard in hopes that their new allies there would offer them refuge (much to Baatu's dismay). It took some time, and no small amount of effort on their part to get into the city proper, but they managed - just in time for Ryce and Solana's twin daughters to come into the world.
(Heavensward)
Faced with their recent troubles, Ryce and Solana ultimately decided to lay low for a while in Ishgard. As much as Ryce wished to help the people, he feared that many of them would not accept his presence, and the last thing he wanted was to be separated from his family. They remained for several months, caring quietly for their twin daughters. Only when news of Raubahn's location reached them, did Ryce insist on aiding in his rescue.Teaming up with the warrior of light, Baatu, and a handful of soldiers from the Immortal Flames, Ryce assisted in storming the prison where Raubahn was kept. He was eager to rescue his adoptive father, and vowed that Ilberd would pay for his betrayal, and for the staged murder of the Sultana.
When Ryce returned to Ishgard, he came back to a somewhat furious Solana - she wasn't upset at the fact that he left, but rather the fact that before he had gone away, she had become pregnant again. In truth, they were both happy to keep expanding their family, but it would become clear that they have the absolute worst timing. Ever.(That and it was forcing Solana to kick her drinking addiction so, wins all around I guess.)There wasn't much time to dwell on it, however, when things in Ishgard began taking a turn for the dangerous. This time, Ryce would not sit idly by while Ishgard's own people began rioting from within. In the process, he was badly wounded, and then saved by a peculiar Viera man, by the name of Julian, who hailed from the astrologian's guild.
While the Warrior of Light remained busy trying to find a way to follow the fled King Thordan to Azys Lla, Ryce remained in Ishgard to recover from his injuries. All thanks to Julian, who was more or less volun-told to look after him, Ryce recovered, and spent much time assisting the people of Ishgard, when he wasn't taking care of his quickly-growing daughters and his wife. He was met with no small amount of skepticism from the locals, but none could deny the fact that he had saved many lives in the chaos. And when news of their King's demise, as well as the truth of Ishgard's history came to surface, Ryce remained supportive of their people. Because of this, Ryce and Solana remained in Ishgard for the next several months, and called the city home during the war against a revived Nidhogg. It was during the height of the conflict when their son, River, was born. After the Dragonsong war was concluded and Ishgard began its repairs, Ryce and Solana made their way back to Ul'dah to reunite with Raubahn. Finally, they managed to get settled into their official home. However, the war between the Empire and Gyr Abania was still brewing, and Ryce was determined as ever to see Ilberd get what was coming to him. When news came to them that Ilberd was attacking Baelsar's Wall under the guise of the Eorzean Grand Companies, he found that he could not sit idly by and let it happen. With resolve, he traveled to Gridania and aided in storming the wall to confront Ilberd. He eagerly assisted the Warrior of Light in taking Ilberd down, and just managed to escape the aftermath. With the deed done, Ryce returned to Ul'dah, and resumed his work amongst the Immortal Flames. For a time.
(Stormblood)
When it became clear that the conflict between the Empire and Gyr Abania would not cease, the Warrior of Light was bade to travel across the sea to the East to plea for help. It was then that all eyes turned to Ryce. As one of the only Scions that hailed from those lands and had experience with their people, it only made sense that he was requested to join on the expedition. Much to his annoyance.Still, he was not one to leave his friends and allies high and dry as it were. After much deliberation, he ultimately agreed to sail with them. Solana insisted on joining too, leaving their three children in Julian's care until they returned.
